Saponaria officinalis. Soapwort contains a high amount of saponins which gives this root its natural soap-like consistency when swirled in water. In times past, this herb was often added to soap recipes to boost the lathering ability or used as-is as a very mild cleanser.

You can add this root to any recipe where you wish a light cleansing action. Try using the infused water as an after-shampoo hair rinse, or a laundry booster or work into your cold process soap recipes.

Please note that the sudsing action of this herb is very mild and gentle, don't expect it to act as a bar of soap would. Soapwort does clean, but its certainly on its own terms. This version is not the root of the plant, but rather stems, buds & leaves.
